The Institute of Dermatology, Singapore was set up in February 1993 to consolidate the National Skin Centre's

- Research activities
- Scientific Publications
in dermatology and venereology.
Since its inception in 1988, the National Skin Centre (NSC) has been organizing all undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes in dermatology and venereology for the National University of Singapore. The NSC has also been very active in organizing continuing medical education (CME) activities for professional bodies, and planning and organizing research activities related to dermatology and venereology. It has also promoted general interest in dermatology and venereology.
The establishment of the IODS heightened NSC's role in the educational and research arenas of dermatology. With the setting up of the IODS, the doctors and staff can be streamlined into those concentrating in clinical service and those interested in teaching and research.
The IODS plans and conducts courses and examinations leading to diplomas in dermatology and venereology in the future. Such courses will help NSC achieve its mission to develop into a national and regional training and educational centre. The IODS will help to increase the pool of medical scientists and enhance medical research and development in Singapore.
