Introduction

The National Skin Centre (NSC) is pleased to host Year 3 medical students from the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine), Nanyang Technological University, for their Dermatology Clinical Posting. Each student will undergo a two‑week attachment at NSC, where they will be introduced to the fundamental principles of dermatology and venereology through a structured combination of lectures, team‑based learning activities, and clinical exposure.

Throughout the attachment, students will observe and learn from dermatologists across a variety of clinical settings, develop skills in recognising common skin conditions, and gain foundational understanding of key dermatological procedures and investigations. This posting aims to provide an early clinical grounding that students can build upon as they progress through their medical training.

The two‑week dermatology posting comprises the following components:

  • 8 didactic lectures
  • 4 Team‑Based Learning Activities
  • 6 general clinic, STI, specialist attachments

  • 1 Mini stations session with clinical skills (patch testing, wound dressing, clinical lab, 

These modules are designed to give students a balanced mix of didactic teaching, interactive learning, and hands‑on clinical exposure.​

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the dermatology posting, students will be able to:​

  • Use appropriate terminology to describe the morphology of skin lesions and recognise common clinical patterns of skin eruptions.
  • Understand key factors involved in assessing patients with dermatological complaints, including rashes, pruritus, pigmentary changes, ulcers, and suspected adverse drug reactions.
  • Diagnose and outline the management principles for common dermatological conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, urticaria, and superficial skin infections.
  • Recognise dermatological emergencies and identify common benign and malignant skin tumours.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with essential dermatological procedures, including cryotherapy, intralesional steroid injections, shave and punch biopsies, fungal microscopy, and tests for parasitic infestations.
  • Understand the evaluation and management of common sexually transmitted infections, including herpes simplex infection, syphilis, gonorrhoea, non‑gonococcal urethritis, and candidiasis.
  • Apply foundational clinical reasoning skills during dermatology clinic sessions, team‑based learning discussions, and hands‑on practical stations.​
