Introduction
The National Skin Centre (NSC) hosts Final Year Medical Students from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (YLLSOM) during their Dermatology Clinical Posting. Each academic year, NSC receives eight rotational batches of students, with each batch comprising approximately 40 students. Every batch will undergo a one‑week clinical attachment at NSC, where they are introduced to core areas of dermatology through a combination of lectures, tutorials, and clinic/ward attachments.
In addition, NSC organizes the Dermatology in Internal Medicine program for Year 3 Medical Students in NHG institutions. Students posted to TTSH, KTPH and WH will undergo a centralised 1-day interactive teaching program in NSC, followed by ward round and bedside tutorials in their respective institutions, conducted by NSC tutors.
Objectives
By the end of the dermatology posting, students will be able to:
- Understand the key factors and descriptors used when evaluating patients presenting with dermatological conditions.
- Describe the morphology of skin lesions using appropriate terminology and recognise common clinical patterns of skin eruptions.
- Diagnose common skin diseases identified in the core curriculum and understand their principles of management, including the ability to identify dermatological emergencies and recognise common malignant skin tumours.
- Demonstrate familiarity with common diagnostic and therapeutic dermatology procedures, such as cryotherapy, intralesional steroid injections, shave and punch biopsies, fungal microscopy and culture, and microscopy for parasitic infestations such as scabies and lice.
- Understand the indications and use of commonly prescribed medications in dermatology, including both topical and systemic treatments for conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and superficial fungal infections.
- Identify key assessment factors when evaluating patients with suspected sexually transmitted infections.
- Demonstrate familiarity with the management of common sexually transmitted infections including herpes simplex infection, syphilis, gonorrhoea, non‑gonococcal urethritis, and candidiasis.
.
